Plainsman Stoneware Mid Fire Clay
Very plastic high iron clay body. Smooth in texture, it is the darkest firing of the medium temperature red bodies.
Wheat is made with Canadian native clays and offers excellent plasticity, strong green strength, and reliable throwing performance. At cone 6 it fires similarly to Plainsman's M340 with slightly less speck, producing a warm, wheat-toned finish inspired by the prairie landscape.
M340GS is based on Plainsman's most popular mid firing clay body M340 with 0,25% added 60-80 mesh granular manganese and an additional 4% fine grog. Not quite as smooth as M340 and sacrifices a little drying strength to get the added texture. Since there is only 4% grog, and only a portion of that is actually coarse enough to feel, there is no gain in drying properties (the most common reason for adding grog to clay bodies). Many customers buy it thinking that it dries better, however M340 by itself is an excellent drier (mainly because of its high dry strength). The presence of the grog is also an issue on functional ware because it introduces grit on rims and edges. It is also problematic in the forming process since it produces water splitting problems, most noticeable when pulling handles or throwing bellies and lips (the grog provides entrance points for the water). M340S is alternate where the speckle is wanted. Contains manganese so a kiln vent should be used during the firing.
A smooth, easy-to-throw stoneware clay containing natural umber (~1% MnO) that fires to an unusually rich deep brown at cone 5. Not for firing at higher temperatures due to increasing likelihood of clay body bloating and manganese fuming. Particle size variations in the umber pigment may occasionally cause specking in glazes.
This M340S is the same as M340 with added manganese to give a brown speckle in oxidation firing.
A smooth cone 6 stoneware that fires buff at cone 6. Recommended for wheel throwing and hand-building.
Mid-temperature, smooth, plastic, semi-vitreous. M370 is Plaisnman's most popular white burning clay. M370 is semi-vitreous (it is somewhat porous at cone 5-7). It is very white because it uses more kaolines and less ball clays.

Plainsman Porcelain Mid Fire Clay
Plainsman's Brightest and Whitest burning earthenware. Made from refined dolomite, ball clay and bentonite.
P300 is a mix of plastic Georgia kaolin, nepheline syenite, 25% silica, raw bentonite (to augment plasticity) and a small amount of talc (for fired maturity control). P300 is not translucent at cone 6. It is the whitest body we can make without using expensive white plasticizers or overseas kaolins.
This body employs New Zealand Halloysite, the whitest burning kaolin available in the world. To that it adds the highest quality ceramic plasticizer available in the world. The full throwing version is a no-compromise product. It is the most translucent, the strongest, the whitest and the most plastic clay body you have ever used! At the same time it dries well.
